06/12/06 - Los Alamos, 1944-1947
Toni Michnovicz Gibson (SI 2002) and her brother, Jon Michnovicz, have sifted through their fathers remarkable snapshots of the sleepy town that just happened to be the epicenter of the Manhattan Project. With official government portraits, documentation of award ceremonies, and Michnoviczs own photographic perusings of this unique western town, Los Alamos: 1944-1947 examines everyday life during this extraordinary era in the communitys history. Toni describes the role that the Meadow Brook Writing Project played in that experience.

There will be a performance/staged reading of "Motown Burning," a play by John Jeffire (2004) on Friday, June 23rd at 8pm at Varner Hall Lab Theater at Oakland University as part of the Heartlande Theater Company Festival. Two initiatives emerged from the November 15 wrap-up meeting of the MBWP Summer Institute of 2003. A teacher-researcher group headed by Kathleen Reddy-Butkovich will form to create support and structure for writing fellows interested in classroom-based research. Also, a continuity interest group, to be convened by 2003 fellows Karen Kline and Carol Osborn, will link fellows of various years and facilitate continued professional development and outreach through Meadow Brook Writing Project.

The 2002 Meadow Brook Writing Project Invitational Summer Institute ended on July 26 with the now traditional luncheon in the Christopher Wren Dining Room of Meadow Brook Hall. The institute was run by MBWP Co-Director Mary Cox and Associate Director Kathleen Reddy-Butkovich.

We sent in our annual report and application for the continuation of our grant. We also joined the Urban Sites Network, enabling us to apply for a mini-grant from that group. If we get the mini-grant, we will offer a focused institute for Detroit Middle School teachers in August.
