Global Health in Florence/Rome, Paris, and Amsterdam
Students will learn about the major infectious and non-communicable diseases in the context of the social determinants of health (e.g., migration) and will also explore how western Europe compares to the United States in its health policies and practices in light of shared health problems.

Location 2: Paris, France; Location 3: Amsterdam, Netherlands
The study abroad component will follow, allowing students to experience first-hand the policies and practices covered in class. Students will learn about the major infectious and non-communicable diseases in the context of the social determinants of health (e.g., migration) and will also explore how western Europe compares to the United States in its health policies and practices in light of shared health problems.
Moreover, the program will provide experiential and service learning opportunities for students to enhance their understanding of the course content, as well as translate their learning into opportunities for employment and/or further education.
In order to register for an Oakland University Study Abroad Program, students must obtain the permission of the instructor/faculty leader. Students must enroll in the Global Health and Social Development course and, therefore, be receiving academic credit. Students must also meet the pre-requisite(s) for the course and be in good academic standing.
Priority Admission and Eligibility
- First Priority: Current Oakland University students who have attained junior status, have a minimum 2.8 G.P.A., and are majoring in Social Work, Sociology, Anthropology, or Criminal Justice.
- Second Priority: Pre-Social Work students who will have met all requirements for admission into the Social Work program by the end of Winter Semester 2013.
- Third Priority: Others who wish to apply for a program.
A minimum of 15 students is required in order for the program to occur; the majority of the participants must be comprised of Oakland University, consortium, and/or guest students. The maximum number of total participants is 30 students, with the opportunity to extend this enrollment with sufficient faculty participation. Should the number of individuals interested in the program exceed the maximum number allowed; all displaced participants will be refunded their application deposit. If the number of students falls below 15, the program will be cancelled, and the application deposit will be returned.
Non-student participants are welcome to attend all learning sessions during the program.
Pre-departure orientation is MANDATORY for all participants.
Approval of applications is left to the discretion of the program leaders. This applies to students, faculty, staff, and outside participants.

- Fill out the online application though International Education
- Gather and submit the following application materials: 1-2 page personal statement about why you want to participate and what you hope to gain from the program, one Letter of Recommendation
- Submit a $100 deposit (refundable if not accepted or course is cancelled). Deposit is applied toward program costs.
Applications are due NO LATER THAN December 10th 2013 at 5:00pm. Only complete applications (online application plus all supporting materials) will be accepted. Applicants will be notified of acceptance by December 15 2013.
At this time, it is estimated the trip will cost approximately $1800.00. Costs include lodging, local transportation and some meals. The cost does NOT include airfare. Students will need to purchase their own airfare. We will be providing dates of arrival and recommendation on air travel carriers throughout the winter semester. Please note, costs can vary depending on time of purchase, therefore it will important for you to monitor air fare prices.
