Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA) Overview

The Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst® (BCaBA®) is an undergraduate-level certification in behavior analysis. Professionals certified at the BCaBA level may not practice independently, but must be supervised by someone certified at the BCBA/ BCBA-D level. In addition, BCaBAs can supervise the work of Registered Behavior Technicians and others who implement behavior-analytic interventions (

Oakland University's BCaBA course sequence, approved by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board, fulfills course requirements for the this credential. BCaBA certification requires a minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited university, completion of an approved series of courses, and a defined period of supervised practical experience, in order to apply for the BCaBA examination. Applicants must meet all eligibility requirements, apply for the credential, and pass the BCaBA examination to become certified at the BCaBA level.

Coursework Overview

  • All courses will be taught by a BCBA or BCBA-D
  • 4 courses are required, offered over 12 months (beginning in Fall 2018)
  • Courses will be held on the campus of Oakland University
  • Tuition Rates: edu/tuition
    • Undergraduate Students: Upper Division Rate (16 credits)
    • PD Students (those who already have a Bachelor's degree): $700 per course (non-credit)

Admission Requirements
Candidates will:

  • have a minimum of a high school diploma (or equivalent)
  • have the potential for success in the field
  • have earned a bachelor’s degree before sitting for the BCaBA exam
  • be required to attend an info session / group interview. Sign up for a session

BCaBAs Interested in Becoming BCBAs
BCaBAs who are in good standing may apply for the BCBA examination once they have completed additional required coursework at the graduate level as well as supervised experience required by the BACB.

The course sequence offered by Oakland University is approved by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) for fulfillment of course requirements for the BCaBA credential.

Individuals accepted into these courses are responsible for arranging their own independent field work in compliance with the criteria set forth by the BACB; Oakland University can provide a list of options.

Courses are not published in SAIL; interested persons must attend an Info Session in order to learn more and get information on how to register for classes.

SE 4851: Foundations of Applied Behavior Analysis | 4 credit hours
(60 hours towards BCaBA content)
Focuses on the principles and concepts of applied behavior analysis (ABA), historical perspective, fundamental vocabulary, philosophy, and methodology of the science of behavior management. Additional topics include the basics of defining behaviors, data collection, and the use of ABA with various populations.

SE 4852: Behavioral Assessment | 4 credit hours
(60 hours towards BCaBA content)
Provides an overview of assessment techniques used in behavior intervention planning, including the history and present use of functional assessments, completion of the functional assessment interview, descriptive and functional analysis, data collection and interpretation, preference assessment, and interpretation of evaluation tools for various populations.

SE 4853: Treatment Planning | 4 credit hours
(60 hours towards BCaBA content)
Focuses on techniques used in behavior intervention planning, data collection, interpretation of assessments, development of goals and objectives, overview and application of treatment interventions, management, supervision, and team planning. Assignments include literature research and paper presentations, participation in discussions, and implementation of behavior assessment principles.

SE 4854: Research Methods/Ethics | 4 credit hours
(60 hours towards BCaBA content)
Includes an overview of research method techniques, theoretical foundations of empirical research, principles of the scientific method, experimental designs, analyses of research designs, research protocol, and formation of research hypothesis, as well as a review of the techniques of behavior intervention planning with an overview of the responsibility, values, ethics, and principles of the field of behavior analysis. Literature research, paper presentations, participation in well-informed discussions and application of principles are the primary teaching methods utilized throughout the course.


BCaBA Information Sessions

Information sessions are a great way to meet faculty and learn about BCaBA coursework. The sessions will discuss the growing field of applied behavior analysis, the 2012 insurance reform legislation, career opportunities and job outlook, behavior analyst certification levels, course details, and touch upon the master’s level program leading to BCBA certification.

Courses are taken in a set sequence, beginning in fall, and are completed within one year. Registration information is not published in SAIL. Courses can be taken by undergraduate students to fulfill 16 credits of electives. They may also be taken by individuals who have completed a bachelor’s degree, at a reduced non-credit rate. Registration information will be shared with eligible candidates after participation in an information session or personal interview.

All sessions will be held in Pawley Hall on the main campus of Oakland University.
