Parent and Family Orientation

Oakland University understands the important role parents and family members play in their students' transition to college. Parent and Family Orientation is designed to acquaint you to campus resources and support services for newly admitted Oakland University students.
The Program

Parent and Family Orientation attendees will receive materials and information designed to help them support their student during their first year at OU. See the schedule tab for additional information about program content.

Parent and Family Orientation is a free full-day program held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the same days as New Student Orientation.

Please remember this program is designed for adults.


Registration

To register for Parent and Family Orientation, your new student must add you as a guest to their New Student Orientation reservation.

If you are unable to attend the same day as your student, contact Orientation and New Student Programs at (248) 370-4653 to register.

Schedule

On orientation day, you will spend time with your student while hearing from important OU staff and participate in parent-only sessions. Details of each session are listed in the sample schedule below.

How to Prepare

Overnight Lodging
If you are traveling from a distance and need lodging, view a list of local hotels.

Directions to OU
Please refer to the campus map for directions to campus. 

Parking
Parking is available in parking lot P-1 across from North and South Foundation Halls. Directional signs and staff will be available to direct you to check-in.

All parking lots are open to students, staff and visitors. Reserved spots are marked clearly. Visitors should be aware that parking regulations are strictly enforced. Neither the orientation staff nor the university will assume responsibility for parking tickets.

Check-In
Check-in for Parent and Family Orientation and New Student Orientation occurs in North Foundation Hall. Directional signs and staff will be available to direct you to check-in. Check-in will begin 30 minutes before the program starts.

Attire
Please feel free to dress casually. We recommend dressing in layers to accommodate changing weather conditions and building temperatures. We also suggest that you bring an umbrella and wear comfortable walking shoes, since family members will participate in a campus or residence hall tour.
