Your gift to Oakland University's business school impacts students, the local economy and the university in ways you may never have imagined. You might find it even impacts your own life in new and enriching ways. Read the stories below to learn about lives transformed through giving:
We are extremely grateful for the generous support of the many individuals and corporations supporting the School of Business Administration at Oakland University.
The business school is dedicated to creating a dynamic intellectual and social environment for our next generation of business leaders. Through partnerships with alumni, friends and various businesses, we are creating an outstanding global curriculum, recruiting and retaining expert faculty and providing student scholarships, learning opportunities that are second to none. Our priorities include:
- Need and merit based student scholarships
- Faculty fellowships
- Undergraduate and graduate program needs, such as ACHIEVE and SCHOLARS
- International exchange and travel
"Giving is important to me in order to improve facilities and programs which, in turn, provide opportunities to students that have lifelong benefits. Those that gave when I was a student certainly helped me and it is now my pleasure to 'pay it forward.'"
Robert T. Martin, SBA '80, President Interior Systems Contract Group (iscg)
"Our lives are enriched by the people we meet and the experiences with these people. At Oakland University, as a developing young person, I was surrounded by exciting, curious, thoughtful, passionate, insightful, positively influential students, professors, administrators, athletes, artists, activists, and others that shared my out look, but most importantly many that challenged and stretched my thinking in the healthiest ways. The education I received in the classroom and through these people at OU has allowed me to reach beyond my grasp in ways that prior to my OU experience I would have never thought possible. I am an active Alumnus as a Board of Visitor with the School of Business at OU because I am committed to doing whatever I can to allow those in my earlier shoes to have the experience that changed my life. My only regret at this point is that I cannot do more."
Raymond Gunn, BS Management, Managing Partner Wingspan Capital Partners, LLC
"A key goal for the future of Michigan is the development and retention of our young people. Oakland and the SBA are important resources in keeping our young folks here. Anything I can contribute to reduce the cost of an SBA education furthers this important goal. I should note, of course, that these young folks also are essential in providing services during my sunset years."
John Tower, Professor Emeritus and Honorary Alumnus of OU
Hometown: Rochester Hills, Mich.
Plans after Graduation? Though I am sad to leave Oakland, I am very fortunate to have already been offered a full-time position as a Financial Analyst for an automotive supplier in Pontiac. Additionally, I plan to combine my education with my work experience to continue to grow my own company into a large-scale marketing and consulting firm with a focus on small business. I also hope to return to Oakland University soon to complete my MBA in Finance.
How did OU prepare you for your career? My classes at OU helped me develop my own company. As I continue to learn more, I can put that knowledge back into my business. My professors have helped me by being understanding, helping me with my schedule so I can continue working full time.
What would you say to Oakland University Donors? As a future donor, I am very excited to be able to contribute to improving student's lives and adding to their experience. Thank you to all the donors of Oakland University. I know that my time at Oakland would not have been as amazing without your help! Thank you.
What student organizations or sports were you involved in? I played IM outdoor and indoor soccer at the rec center. As for organizations, I was the treasurer for the American Marketing Association, the president of Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) from 2012 to 2013, and was the marketing director for Oakland University Student Congress (OUSC) from 2011 to 2012.
What makes OU Special? OU is special because even though there are more than 20,000 students, you are still seen as an individual. Professors, deans, and pretty much everyone on campus is willing to help students.
Have alumni payed a part in your education or influenced you during your time here? I would say my parents have as alumni. They are very proud of Oakland and all it helped them achieve in their lives, which resulted in them pushing us to take advantage of everything OU had to offer.
What is the most memorable thing you did at OU? I was the first marketing director for OUSC. Developing the position with the goal of getting the word out about OUSC’s events helped the organization greatly. Seeing the position grow each year has been rewarding.
Parting Words: My experience at Oakland not only has been memorable, but extremely meaningful. A majority of this is due to the education and opportunities Oakland has provided for me. I am very proud of who I am today and who I have grown to be. There is nowhere else that could have given me this gift.
"Your gift matters to me because it allows Oakland to grow, which helps me grow even more as an individual."
